Third Sixteenth Technique

Check out this technique used in the outro of the song Hey Man Nice Shot as well as some variations of the pattern.

The snare strokes in bar 97 are played on every third sixteenth of the groove (excluding beat 1). To demonstrate this, check out the counting below. The bold counts represent where the snare strokes fall:

1 e & ah 2 e & ah 3 e & ah 4 e & ah

This technique can also be used with the bass drum. The first beat below uses the pattern from bar 97 above but replaces the snare drum with bass strokes. The second groove adds a common two-four backbeat.

You can continue the bass groove (playing every 3rd sixteenth) across multiple measures. It takes 3 bars to repeat the cycle. This creates a cool, polyrhythmic effect (see below).
