When the leader of a jazz band in a deserted local pub announced, “We are the Sultans of Swing,” Mark Knopfler found the lofty name amusing, given their surroundings. The experience inspired him to write this song.
Pick Withers plays a compellingly dynamic drum part. Open hats, accents and bells, Withers leaves nothing behind. Take note that the crash cymbal is to be played with the tip of the stick rather than a full crash. Also, quarter notes should be placed with the hi-hat foot when playing the ride cymbal.
